Anatomic vs. Reverse Shoulder Replacement

An educational overview of how shoulder arthritis and rotator cuff function affect shoulder replacement choices.

Different shoulder replacement designs

Anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement address different clinical needs. The appropriate implant depends on joint anatomy, the function of the rotator cuff, underlying joint disease and the goals of treatment.

Anatomic replacement

Anatomic shoulder replacement recreates the shoulder's natural ball-and-socket arrangement and is often considered when the rotator cuff is intact and can function normally.

Reverse replacement

Reverse shoulder replacement changes the ball-and-socket orientation and may be appropriate for selected arthritis patterns, rotator cuff dysfunction, fracture, or complex shoulder conditions.
